The design of the new Joan & Edgar Booth Theatre and College of Fine Arts Production Center at Boston University offers the first chance in decades to unify the school’s theatre arts program, which had long been split between two facilities. It also elevates the university’s presence on Commonwealth Avenue, featuring a welcoming, 40-foot glass facade that reaches out toward the street with a 14-degree tilt actively engaging the public, and celebrates its dynamic theatre arts programs in the Boston area. The new state-of-the-art 75,000-square-foot complex, which opened in December 2017, provides teaching tools for all aspects of theatre production and performance and is a highly technical facility with extremely sensitive acoustical environments and sophisticated lighting, rigging, and production systems. Set back on its arts plaza, the new building is comprised of the 21,000-square-foot multi-functional studio theatre for an audience of 250, the Production Center housing paint, set, and scene shops, plus faculty offices and teaching spaces that include a sound and light laboratory as well as theatre production and support facilities.
