Brief was a Far East restaurant project with a focus on Japanese cuisine that attracted attention in Central Asia. Since the space is located inside the hotel, we had to create a reason to bring customers to the top floor. That's why we set out with the idea of creating an interesting concept that will highlight the view and the cuisine. Surrounded by the awe-inspiring Tian Shan (Mountains of Heaven), Iwa is a contemporary Far East restaurant at the top floor of Bishkek’s highest building. As an important expression of the Shinto belief, which is one of the most common Japanese religions, animism perceives all things (living or nonliving) as animated and alive. According to the myths, everything possesses spiritual essence as well as rocks and mountains. Iwa, meaning rock in Japanese, is situated like an outstanding shrine on a high rock. In order to emphasize its connection with Tian Shan, every detail in the interior has been created with an intention of evoking spiritual emotions. Both the brand identity and the restaurant interior have details inspired from the concept of “rock” and Shinto shrines. Lighting design located above the cocktail & sushi bar has been designed with an inspiration of Shimenawa, kind of a rope used for ritual purification in the Shinto religion. Entering the restaurant, guests are welcomed by a captivating hanging rock, and behind the welcome desk, by natural stone columns rising skywards through a glass ceiling. Lightings, bars, floor coverings and the shared table have been inspired by the concept of “rock”. Sliding wood panels, slightly elevated platforms, chairs that remind sitting on the floor, wood ceiling and wall panels refer to the traditional Japanese architecture. To achieve a unity between the brand’s and the restaurant’s identity, slightly ascending lines in the logo have been inspired by the rocks and wood panels used in the interior design. We have designed the lightings and mountain relief that reflects Tian Shan and worked with an artist for their production. Every detail designed for the brand, space and the story has been carefully considered to reinforce the concept. The concept is based on the key idea created due to the location of the place, that is, a strong foundation. Each detail in the design has been thoroughly thought out to enhance the concept and refers to the story that we created with a holistic approach.
