In response to client’s philosophy of making its restaurant a place of fine dining and a piece of art, design focuses on building an environment of high aesthetic value where visitors enjoy not only savory, but also visual pleasure. Project site is located in Beijing’s landmark Parkview Green, a modern architecture renowned as a bub for innovative thinking and contemporary art.
The design aims at creating a novel fushion of distinctive Japanese Karesansui landscape and Chinese Siheyuan design in new form Essence of ‘dry landscape’ and balanced form are reinvented and harmonized in contemporary forms and style. Modern techniques and metals replace materials typical of these traditional designs. Polished steel, fine stones and lighting effects, instead of Washi paper, sand, rocks, greenery and water, are used. Shopfront and ceiling designs are centerpiece of the design.
Shopfront is a Karesansui landscape with bold water current images on the door and walls. An undulating wall in sandy colour with spotlights shows a rippling visual effect, faintly screened by an array of symbolic bamboo trees assembled by steel-plates. Interior layout adopts Chinese classic Siheyuan concept of a balanced form. It also represents the brand’s Japanese identity in a Chinese city.
To serve visitors from all walks of life who gather for different purposes, the venue is divided into different sections. A spacious atrium as the main dining hall is surrounded by private rooms on its south, east, north, west. It is a place for casual dining outlined by corridors. Translucent glass screens in bamboo motifs are installed to provide privacy without losing visual comfort. Ceiling is a 3D art piece. Built on the concept of Siheyuan courtyard with a pond of fish and Karesansui dry landscape, it features a school of fish rippling the water in a pond.
The private rooms are located on the sides right next to the main entrance. Visitors can have quick access without crossing other dining areas. Furnished in a natural earthy tone with images of Chinese blossoms and auspicious cranes, it offers a subtle touch of nature. Last but not least, signature Robatayaki and Teppanyaki cuisines are served in the rear area. As a place for carefree chats and social gatherings, big space is reserved to build two open kitchens. Wooden sliding panels are in place to serve as a soundproof device when necessary.
