Nestled in one of Manhattan’s most iconic intersections, Interwoven, a temporary installation by Atelier Cho Thompson, commanded the Flatiron North Public Plaza with its sweeping candy-colored arches. Throughout its six-week span, more than two million people experienced the installation, passing through its LED-lit shapes or finding a moment of connection within its structure. Imagined for the 8th annual Flatiron Holiday Design competition, Atelier Cho Thompason was challenged to bring people of all walks of life together after years of isolation. The team also embraced this opportunity to build community by recruiting manufacturers like award-winning materials innovator 3form to help bring Interwoven to life. Defined by parabolic arches inspired by the intersecting geometries that make up the Flatiron Building’s shape and America’s woven tapestry of cultures, Interwoven stood out among Manhattan’s gridded streets. Inside the interlocking arches, webbed hammocks and cork benches invited a moment of respite and conversation—a welcomed change of pace to New York’s bustling streets. The installation also featured a story wall with the prompt, “I dream of a world where together we can…”, encouraging visitors to write their responses on a backlit wall of paper squares. Designed to withstand inclimate weather and high traffic during the holiday season, Interwoven was constructed with steel framing, wire mesh, and 3form’s translucent Chroma resin panels. Specifically crafted for exterior durability and illuminosity, Chroma maximized functionality while its translucent finish prompted visibility throughout the installation. Lighting played an integral role in the interactive design and overall message behind Interwoven. The archways were activated by color-coded sensors; when two or more people passed through sensors of the same color, Interwoven responded with corresponding lights and musical compositions submitted by local artists that resonated with the installation's theme. In order to execute the interactive lights, Atelier Cho Thompson had to find a material that didn’t interfere with Interwoven’s wireless lighting signals, but also gave the LEDs a prominent glow. Chroma’s transparency and luminosity offered flexibility throughout the light design process and matched the LED colors, maximizing Interwoven’s interactive capabilities. Atelier Cho Thompson challenged themselves to specify sustainable materials throughout the installation. 3form—a company dedicated to optimizing products, establishing protocols that reduce its carbon footprint, and contributing to the restoration of the planet—was thrilled to donate their recyclable and renewable Chroma material to the project. Chroma also qualifies for 3form Reclaim™, which keeps end-of-life material out of landfills. After Interwoven’s New York debut, it was reinstalled in New Haven, CT, where it continued to form human connections.
