The nexus of two dynamic architectural forms created a unique design opportunity in Palo Alto California. Here a 67,000 sf building was split in two, the resultant forms were then offset, creating a void in between. A serpentine blue metal ribbon springs forth on both sides of this void and runs the length of the two building masses, creating a symbolic statement about innovation—the Innovation Curve. This allows for a lobby that is completely transparent on two sides, but must also allow for free access across the lobby and between the two office spaces on both floors. In addition, the lobby serves as a visual gateway from the public access entry to a vast landscaped corporate park. The lobby design extended these concepts thru the interior to create a wholly integrated solution, which is delicate, dynamic and colorful at the same time. A freestanding elevator was encased in a cylinder of frosted acrylic, backlit with programmable LED lights. This colorful element anchors the lobby, as well as referencing colored glass fins on the building exterior. A column free bridge, which spans 90 feet, links the second floors as a thin ribbon, which appears to float across the ethereal void of the lobby.
