This project aims to transform the storefront of a shopping mall into a Thai food restaurant. With the site being very long and narrow, our objective is to create a genuine Thai cultural experience within this limited space.

Challenged by the narrowness but inspired by the height of the site, we wanted to relate the space to the traditional night markets of Thailand. We placed several working counters separately in the restaurant, similar to the vendors sitting in Thai street markets. To further enhance the idea of a Thai market, we collaborated with artist, Bannavis Andrew Sribyatta from Dictator for Architecture and Design Thailand, to bring to life traditional Thai craftsmanship into the space. Above the dining area are hand-woven bamboo nets made by Thai craftsman, each individual piece allows light to cast through, creating beautiful shadows onto the dining surface. The bamboo nets not only highlight the relationship between the interior and exterior, it also serves as a barrier separating dinning tables and the aisle area.

Within the restaurant, the space is embellished with exquisite bamboo baskets, decorative tiles, hand-made swing chairs. Whether to dine under the bamboo shed, watch Eszter Chen’s masterpiece, or jump onto the cozy swing chair, these design elements encourages customers to relax and feel at ease while enjoying their meal. By blending Thai elements into this space, we hope customers can have an authentic experience like that of a Thai market.
