Suburbs are sometimes thought of as dystopian, isolated places. The Hyperloop Suburb, an experiential exhibit at the Time Space Existence exhibition in Venice explores whether advances in transportation technology can breathe new life into these liminal spaces. Bringing airplane speed to ground level travel, a hyperloop is a high-speed system capable of closing the distance between the city and its rural periphery. Situated between the urban and pastoral, suburbs can potentially be at the center of an impending regional re-think, raising the critical question “How do we want to live".

The exhibit examines speculative regional, neighborhood and housing implications of this potential urban-pastoral merge. Compact, sustainable homes, graphically displayed in the installation, are situated in a cluster around a purposely under-programed communal commons that houses social, cultural and family events. The video loop on the floor speaks to the potential for community engagement within this common space.

Barriers between clusters will disappear with the advent of view corridors to the city and countryside beyond. Depicted in vivid color in the exhibit, this neighborhood network links offices, hydroponic food incubators, drone ports and community cultural space.

Investigating the interaction of new technologies within open space and built form, the Hyperloop Suburb can provide a prototype for pluralist communities across a metropolitan and agrarian continuum.
