Carpentry

A renovation for a young family in Amsterdam’s east, the project is located in a cul-de-sac at the end of a row of three storey townhouses on the outside edge of Funenpark, in Amsterdam.

The catalyst for the renovation was the extension of a first-floor mezzanine, which was previously the master bedroom, into a full floor to provide a more spacious configuration.

In catering for the family, the project focused on using cabinetry to redefine the interior architecture, with oak volumes dancing around the perimeter of the ground floor providing ample storage capacity, and moderating the family’s desire for bold colour that splendidly complements their growing art collection.

A focus on functional quirks shifts gestures away from the mundane and into the experiential; a bouldering handle that acts as the pull for the bathroom door or a new vibrant stairwell which blends together functional elements of the ground floor’s complex programme.

Up these very stairs, on the first floor, a large platform was introduced to create differentiation between resting and living spaces. A sunken bed rests as the focal point, the surrounding cabinetry concealing a plethora of storage opportunities inclusive of a hidden chair. The entry wall to the room was transformed into graphical paneled wall, an homage to the scenography of the client’s favorite movie scene, hiding the doors to the corridor and walk in wardrobe.

On the top floor, 2 smaller rooms were combined into one lilac utopia for 2 young girls.

A shared play space, importantly fitted with a disco ball, is flanked by diplomatic configurations of rest, storage, work and beauty furnitures so each sibling has the same space, accented in a light turquoise.

The project was a play in maximalism vs minamilism; bold and contrasting colours mediated by highly functional volumes.

Blessed with a relatively new build with a good energy rating, quite rare find in Amsterdam, , the structure needed no further works allowing the design to focus on creating an interior that would sustain the family’s changing needs as they grow together.
