With respect for the historical building structure, sensitivity towards design, and a great deal of craftsmanship, the interior of House Kilchberg was brought to new life. Being the center of life for a family with three children, the brief of the extensive renovation was to create a contemporary, uncomplicated and functional house that shines again, yet representing the original construction period of the 1920s. Located on a hill with a grand garden by the lake of Zurich, the house provides a magnificent view of the Zurich lake from most rooms. Due to multiple renovations works in the 90s the house had started to lose character and structure. The goal of the project was to restore the historical elements gently and to preserve the warm and cozy character of the house through delicate planning. The renovations were vast including a complete bathroom and kitchen reconstruction. To create an open kitchen, a wall was knocked down and an island was installed with a natural quartzite Bianco stone. For the master bathroom, the space was rearranged and painted in a rich dark blue giving the room a sophisticated look. To finish off the design the floors and countertop were tiled in large formats of natural travertine stone, brightening up the space. On the contrary, the children’s bathroom is kept in bright colors and playful tiles. The floors were leveled and covered with a herringbone flooring to harmonize with the rest of the house. The staircase is the real jewel of the house with a historical wooden banister, the new oak steps, and last but not least with the handcrafted bronzed metal handrails on the landings. These were created to add height to the railings, which originally didn’t meet the requirements of the house.
