The House Grey is an interior design project of a private residence apartment unit nestled on the ground floor in a low-rise residential complex situated in a serene neighbourhood in Kowloon, Hong Kong. This property’s existing interior layout was demolished and underwent complete renovations. The project is an architect’s own abode, and the essence of the design brief was to craft a private dwelling comprising 3 bedrooms, alongside essential living amenities and spacious living quarters to cater to the resident's need for both relaxation and seclusion.

Due to its existing floor area and structural constraints, the design of the internal layout is a carefully curated journey through three major zones - a distinctive wedge-shaped courtyard, strategically arranged internal spaces with a blend of privacy and openness, and a serene patio area for relaxation and contemplation. To enhance the functionality and efficiency of the internal spaces, meticulous attention was given to exploring and understanding the intricate relationship between these zones, harmonizing their scale, color schemes, textures, and finishes to create a harmonious and visually appealing living environment.

The use of color greys sets the fundamental basis of most interior finishes, it is a peaceful color that exudes elegance and timelessness, making it a versatile choice to accentuate architectural elements. Grey stands out as an omnipresent neutral in contemporary aesthetics, like an 18% grey card, its neutrality implies that it is quite uneventful, doesn’t attract attention, greys, whether in clothing, furniture, paint and fabric, offer the sense of anonymity, almost allows a kind of detachment from anyone or anything: cocooned in grey and feel safe. Its unassuming and non-intrusive nature also allows it to harmonize effortlessly with a myriad of color schemes, often creating unexpectedly striking combinations.

In House Grey, the use of sustainable plywood as a lining material over the neutral greys to walls between spaces, storage and services not only brings warmth to the interior, but also a response to environmental sustainability, as these materials are locally sourced and produced.
