Sorell Hotel Zürichberg is the flagship hotel of the Sorell-Hotels group, situated in a beautiful location with a view of Zurich city, the lake, and the mountains. It was completed in the 1900s and is a striking contemporary witness to the reform architecture of the time: this was represented by architects who changed from historicism at the beginning of the 20th century but adhered to traditional building materials and construction methods. The 37 hotel rooms in the old building and 30 rooms in the iconic cylindrical extension from 1995, represented a stylistic patchwork. The design is based upon the idea of the rooms and corridors to represent the rather unadorned modesty of reform architecture. With the use of long-lasting regional materials and exceptional craftsmanship, a rather simple yet elegant space was brought to life. Due to the short renovation time and without interfering with the ongoing hotel operations, a modular wall structure with an integrated lighting system was developed. This minimized substantial electrical works and raggling of the walls. Simultaneously the hotel restaurant was also renovated. We were commissioned to work out a proposal that refers to the history of the house and its surroundings. It was the explicit wish of the client to achieve these design goals by architectural rather than decorative means. Reinterpreting wall paneling and stucco was the fundament of the design. The artistic neon installations on the ceiling of the restaurant show the listed stucco plasterers, while geometric wall reliefs of light beige fiberglass concrete reflect the subject of the dark wood paneling. The restaurant serves as a breakfast restaurant in the mornings: A necessary cooling buffet was integrated within a piece of large wooden furniture, which can be hidden behind vast curtains. The chairs covered in colorful textile are the only color carrier in the room, creating an exciting contrast to the warm beige tones of the room.
