The dark blue of the new infill building is taken from the high sky of Bergen at twilight. When this sky is reflected in the large windows the façade becomes one solid in contrast to the punctuated effect of the lighter coloured adjacent façades. The entrance to the hotel is through a green windcatcher. Contrary to most hotels, you’re not immediately met by the reception desk, but instead a surprisingly large and airy room with an overview of the entire space. How you choose to navigate is up to you: straight ahead is the bar; to the left is the Matbar restaurant; to the right is the lounge and the reception is at the far end. These variations functions appear to overlap, creating fluidity to a space that ebbs and flows throughout the day. The bedrooms on the five floors above are accessed along dark blue corridors that reference the colour of the façade. The guest rooms are rational in their design and visually enlarged with generous-sized windows. In some rooms, windows are partially covered in blue glass which, during the day, barely registers from the outside, but is enjoyed from inside. At night, the effect is reversed with the windows glowing blue when backlit by the room lights.
