Hotel Sonne: A lodging for royal modernists Where did King Ludwig II prefer to stay to recover from his mundane state affairs? In the region of Königswinkel in Allgäu and also in Füssen, not far away from his royal castles in Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. In the heart of Füssen, at Prinzregentenplatz 1, stands 'Hotel Sonne', which the architects OSA from Munich have refurbished and extended on behalf of the hotelier family Martin and Beatrice Hanauer. The interior design and furnishings of 'Hotel Sonne' would have caught the attention of the tech-savvy King Ludwig II. He was only too eager to use the most modern equipment in his buildings and furniture, athough he embraced tradition and often presented himself in historical costumes. This fusion between state of the art equipment and imaginative tradition has been taken into account by OSA in the planning of the new hotel, in it´s entirety and in many of the fine details. The new building The project includes the interior refurbishment of the existing buildings from different eras, as well as the construction of a new building with 5 floors and an underground car park on an area of 2,300 square meters. This new connecting between the two existing buildings extends along Luitpoldsstraße and is completely glazed in the ground floor, as is the adjacent building that houses the entrance. The five upper floors of the new building and the main building are clad with red plaster with a broom finish on the outside. This section can be considered the main building of the hotel complex. Here is the entrance, the lounge and the so-called 'living room', which is a breakfast salon, a restaurant, a coffee house and a bar,all at the same time depending on the time of day. The kitchen and the spa with garden are also reachable through the main section. In addition, about 30 new hotel rooms were created for the 'Hotel Sonne'. History & Tech 'Hotel Sonne' has always been a themed hotel, with many details reminiscent of the most famous of all the Bavarian kings, Ludwig II, and his close contemporaries whom he held in high esteem. These include his cousin, Empress Elisabeth of Austria, the composer Richard Wagner, his wife Cosima, his cook Theodor Hierneis and his court flunky Lorenz Mayr. Through the new interior design and details, OSA Ochs Schmidhuber Architects have brought the stories and special features of these people back to life for posterity. Tradition and progress go hand in hand in the 'Hotel Sonne', because inspite of the journey into the past, the hotel has arrived in the middle of the 21st century with its technical apparatus: There is technology-based hotel equipment here that the fairy-tale king would have been thrilled with. The motif and the guiding principle associated with Ludwig II's special lifestyle run not only through the individual room designs. The public areas accessible to all hotel guests and visitors also refer in motifs to the epoch of Ludwig II, but are rethought in contemporary form and material. Other public areas can be used for a variety of purposes, such as events, cultural events or large festivities. Hotel 4.0 The rooms are between 30 and 40 square meters in size. They show many stimulating contrasts in the materiality. If the floors are lined in parquet, the surfaces of the ceilings are of exposed concrete. The bathrooms are open in floor plan, yet generously cut, nobly equipped. At the same time, the digital age has clearly moved in: Each room has an in-room tablet as a digital guest folder, with which all services such as the table in the restaurant, the wellness treatments in the spa, sightseeing in the footsteps of King Ludwig II or a sleigh ride can be availed. The guest also receives push up information with interesting offers for their stay in 'Hotel Sonne' via the tablet. The digital service is already available from the time of booking and can be used by the guest until checkout. With a QR code, the hotel guest can check in and out. For those who still prefer the old school way, a concierge awaits them at the 'Hotel Sonne'.
