Opened in 2011, the concept of Hotel Anteroom is to create a place that gathers the art and culture of contemporary Kyoto. This project involved increasing the number of guest rooms by 67. Although the hotel is a modern renovated building, the facility incorporates Japanese aesthetics in the interior design. The art work exhibited in the guest rooms and common areas is carefully selected, and combining new pieces with the existing selection renews the design of the hotel as a whole. Well-known artists were in responsible for concept rooms’ art direction that aims to highlight artistic expression. Standard rooms’ simple design accentuates the art work by incorporating design elements such as Japanese garden, small elevations and ink tiles that refer to traditionally Japanese taste. Since the hotel’s theme is “art fair 365 days a year”, more than 200 pieces of art by 70 artists are displayed inside the hotel. All art work is available for purchase to support young up-and-coming artists. The facility also features a studio which enables artists to continue creative work while staying at the hotel. Gathering practicing artists marks Hotel Anteroom on Kyoto’s art scene, and provides a setting where guests can come experience creative expression.
