Working on such a breathtaking site was a lifetime experience for our studio, and our design approach was one of restraint and detail. Responding to the raw coastal surrounds, we embraced a softened interior that nurtures shadow, light and form to humanize and elevate the lived experience of the home. The interior design for this project begun with a considered and creative spatial plan for the interior envelope, with each room connecting to another as well as to individual view lines. Embracing the landscape was an integral part of our design discovery process, as doing so enabled us to create unique design moments throughout, such as raked stone, undulating non-radial walls, rolled bulkheads intersecting curved walls and delicately shaped balustrades. Working with a team of highly skilled makers, artisans, builders and craftspeople to bring this vision to life, also meant that we were able to create a truly inclusive interior, celebratory of Australian design talent and materiality across multiple disciplines. For our studio, Horizon Flinders truly exemplifies design excellence. In a world of trends, repetition and visual overexposure, it is special and rare to work on a project that has such a vast variety of one-of-a-kind details and finishes. Our connection to the project and careful attention to its natural surrounds enabled us to immerse ourselves each day in the foundational design principals of shape, form and flow. This intense immersion was an opportunity for our team to apply their expertise but also continue to learn and grow from this incredible project. Ultimately, we were able to create an interior environment that encapsulated all design elements from planning, design detailing documentation, construction detailing and furniture, to selection and procurement of all furniture, art and accessories. Throughout the specification process, every material, finish, appliance and product was carefully evaluated to meet energy efficient guidelines. Working closely with our client, builder and landscaper, we made sure that all additions were conducive to the surrounding environment, native to the local flora and fauna and able to stand the test of time. Our intention, as always is to design for permanence and functionality, and this project — of strength, authenticity and craftsmanship — is certainly no exception. In exploring a variety of materials from crafted stone to polished plaster, we were able to incorporate many design details that were a first of their kind; The softened curvature of the grand stair is experienced through the smooth balustrade, shaped perfectly to the hand that holds it. In the kitchen, the island bench appears hewn and carved from a foamy white marble, encapsulating a gentle ocean wave. It is this creation, development and implementation of custom design that takes cues from the natural surrounds, that makes this project truly innovative.
