UNITY IN DIVERSITY
How do you unite over 100 unique brands in one inspiring work environment? For Henkel’s Global Supply Chain Headquarters in Amsterdam, the challenge was to create a space that celebrates brand individuality while fostering unity, collaboration and a sense of belonging.
Inspired by a patchwork quilt, our concept brings together distinct identities into a visually cohesive whole. The metaphor comes to life in the playful floor design of overlapping carpet tiles and in a sculptural ceiling artwork in the heart-shaped community space. Flowing, colourful fabrics form a three-dimensional patchwork, while transparent curtains shape a lively balance between openness and privacy—creating a welcoming “home away from home” for Henkel’s international team.
Our approach combined creativity with technical precision. In close collaboration with Henkel’s Corporate Real Estate, Communications and DE&I teams, we held workshops and mock-up sessions to ensure broad support. Together with our Design & Build partner Ditt, we translated the concept into an efficient and seamless implementation.
Material choices supported both aesthetics and performance. The patchwork flooring enhances acoustics and orientation, while the DE&I wall features work by both male and female Dutch artists. Natural light was optimised throughout, and biophilic elements—including plants and soft materials—reinforce wellbeing and the connection to nature.
Sustainability was a guiding principle. All finishes were selected with BREEAM in mind, including cradle-to-cradle Ege carpet tiles, Silestone with EPD certification, and recycled-content MDF in custom-made furniture by BOOM. The result is a future-proof, human-centric environment that integrates circularity and comfort without compromise.
Henkel’s Amsterdam office brings together employees from over 40 nationalities. By embracing diversity not just visually, but spatially and emotionally, the design fosters inclusion, creativity and connection. It’s more than an office—it’s a dynamic hub where global talent feels seen, supported, and inspired.
“Fokkema & Partners not only followed our guidelines, they captured the essence of Henkel and translated it into a design that truly connects people. The result is an office that embraces sustainability, biophilia and diversity from start to finish.”
