For Hemmerle’s 2021 booth design for Design Miami in Basel, Tom Postma Design (TPD) created a new iteration of their iconic timber-screened booth. The reconfigured screens provide a different experience with recognisable structures, giving a sense of continuity in both design technique and visual identity. The intricate American walnut framework defines the space, creating a permeable boundary between the booth and the rest of the fair. From the exterior, the visitor is offered subtle glances of the refined jewellery, carefully illuminated by bespoke lighting, reflecting Hemmerle’s art and craftmanship.

Innovation
The bespoke timber framework of the booth offers an interesting play between open and closed. It provides the visitors a unique visual connection with the showcases and the beautiful jewellery inside them. The design consists of several screens, which are made up of more than 1,000 round rods of American walnut and over 5,000 specially manufactured pieces of aluminium compound that connect them.

Creativity
Tom Postma Design and the world-renowned jewellery house worked closely to create a light, transparent and inviting space for the Hemmerle presentation. The space reflects the radical simplicity and the technical perfection of the Hemmerle jewellery. The ambitious design and the use of high-quality but modest materials like wood and aluminium for this sculptural structure form a showcase of outstanding craftsmanship.

Functionality
The booth offers the visitor different layers of experience. The first layer is the permeable façade that offers a glimpse into the booth and already reveals some pieces of jewellery in the integrated vitrines. Upon entry, the booth opens up as a calm landscape of vitrines, highlighting the jewellery pieces. Lastly, a functional furniture corner offers visitors a more intimate experience with the objects, allowing them to experience the pieces first hand.

Sustainability
The Hemmerle booth for Design Miami is a new configuration of previous booth elements. The iconic framework of the booth consists of American walnut and aluminium, both high-quality materials. The specially developed system is flexible and can be installed in various configurations and re-used for multiple years. Made from durable stainless steel and glass, the existing vitrines were also re-used for the presentation. The booth was lit entirely with LED’s. After dismounting, all elements were preserved in special storage crates in order to extend their lifespan, going against single-use, throwaway culture.
