Heia Studio presents the new creative office and headquarters for HAVEN, a men’s streetwear label providing utilitarian men’s clothing with a timeless everyday aesthetic. HAVEN owners, Daniel and Arthur Chmielewski, sought a space that reflected the HAVEN brand ethos of visual simplicity, enduring materials, and attention to detail. Situated on a busy thoroughfare, we designed a unique entry sequence to separate the street from the interior. A concrete screen block wall creates an interior "front yard" and runs along the south-facing glazed frontage. To further blur the line between outside and inside, we introduced rock gardens of cacti, succulents and tropicals, along with long bench seating. This gradual transition from outside-in, with natural stone and living plants create decompression space for visitors and inhabitants alike. A creative workplace requires a variety of unique working environments. Within the larger volume of this double-height space, separate working environments are expressed through smaller volumes with distinct materials. We built few full-height walls. Rather, considered placement of design elements define discrete areas and create semi-permeable boundaries. The upper mezzanine is home to the clothing design team and executive offices and features over 30 feet of clothing archive storage with sliding metal panel screens that double as magnetic pinup walls. Workstations on the ground level support e-commerce warehouse operations and a library doubles as an impromptu meeting area. A double-height photo studio supports in-house photography with a seamless backdrop, ceiling mounted lighting rig and a large, rolling barn door for bringing equipment in and out. The kitchen and social space, located adjacent to the photo studio, includes a 20-foot bar (including beer tap), linear pendant lighting by Vancouver-based company ANDLight and bespoke Dek Stools from Division Twelve. A rock garden separates the kitchen area from the back exit and loading entrance. Detailed lighting design ensures the high level of colour rendering necessary for clothing design. Full adjustability enables occupants to modify the lighting to suit different activities and moods. Additional lighting considerations were made for the low ceiling area in the bustling wholesale distribution and warehouse space below the mezzanine which has affectionately come to be called "the bunker" by staff.
