Hanaholmen Cultural Institute is a Swedish-Finnish conference centre, hotel and restaurant located on the island of Hanasaari in Espoo, Finland. Since its completion in 1975, Hanaholmen has worked to develop the co-operation between Finland and Sweden in all societal areas. Designed by architect Veikko Malmio, owned by the state of Finland, and operated by the Swedish-Finnish Cultural Foundation, Hanaholmen is a valuable representation of Finnish 70s architecture and cultural history. The aim of the institute’s recent renovation was to preserve the cultural history, original architecture and art collection while bringing the various areas of the building up to modern-day standards. The updated interiors by Design Office KOKO3 bow to the original interior design, while adding contemporary elements to the mix. Half of the 66 hotel rooms were updated to reflect the new hotel room concept, which was inspired by Swedish design house Svenskt Tenn. The bold colours and patterns splattered across the hotel rooms add a cheerful touch against the serene views of pine trees and the local archipelago. Bold elements, sharp lines and nature intertwine throughout the building, without sacrificing the true 70s spirit. Today, Hanaholmen welcomes visitors to a new lobby bar, as well as the updated hotel rooms, conference facilities, auditorium and restaurant serving Nordic style dishes. The architectural renovation and expansion were conducted by Kirsi Korhonen and Mika Penttinen Ltd.
