The project is a multi-level Infill Building on the footprint of an old car garage. Surrounded by an overpass and former factories, the restaurant’s spaces take the form of a ‘Hyper garage’. The interior is punctuated with standard terracotta blocks, formed to create a play of shadows during the day and embedded with LEDs to provide atmospheric illumination at night. The client vision, our narrative, and the program demanded an innovative use of primal materials: terracotta. Wrapping around 50ft tall interior volumes, each block would be formed and sequenced uniquely to maintain structural integrity, interface with building systems, and express the sculptural qualities desired. The monumental vision of the project required the use of 3,700 terracotta blocks. Standard approaches could not achieve the effects our team desired - we had to develop our own ground-up processes to manufacture and install mass-customized masonry. Partnering with a terracotta block manufacturer, masons, and a specialty engineer, we pursued production methodologies using automated wire cutter systems. Digital and physical mock-ups were used to create a library of parameterized design criteria that optimized corbelling, grout thickness, weight, and fabrication complexity. Sets of drawings were automated through fully integrated BIM models.
