The Grote Sint Laurenskerk in Alkmaar is a church with a great history. It contains the oldest organ in the Netherlands and a vault painting attributed to Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsaanen. With around 85,000 visitors per year, it is the most visited heritage site in Alkmaar. After it’s major restoration, the building naturally needed to fulfil a greater role in the city. A master plan was formulated to address the new needs. The exhibition is part of the larger plan containing among other things a new entrance, restaurant/bar, wardrobe and sanitary services. OPERA’s design addressed the new requirements providing an interpretation layer narrating the rich history of the church, creating a catering facility in the form of a bar, as well as adding 200 m2 of additional storage space required in order to better service events and concerts.
