Gong House is a family residence located in the countryside of Wenzhou, China. The design seamlessly integrates with the natural environment of the countryside while emphasizing the research and development of localized building materials. The goal is to craft a residence where urban lifestyle merge with the rural setting, offering a traditional yet modern family gathering space.

Innovation:
The design utilizes natural light and wind in the countryside, introducing natural ventilation through a thoughtful combination of doors and windows, thereby eliminating the need for a mechanical fresh air system. A new material, hemp brick, has been developed, which is made from straw, hemp, and other plant fibers mixed with cement and aggregate. This material adapts to contemporary construction methods, offering a blend of tradition and modernity. The uniquely designed windows can adjust sunlight, while respecting neighborhood relations. Square windows capture the scenic beauty of the Jiangnan landscape, stimulating interaction between residents and nature. The predominant brown color palette creates a peaceful atmosphere, while teak wood adds warmth and intimacy.

Creativity:
According to designers, the integration of rural life with nature goes beyond merely staying and admiring. They fully utilized the natural resources around the house to enhance living comfort. The design introduces the countryside’s water, natural light, and air into the home. Local materials are used to develop new building materials that are compatible with contemporary construction methods, seamlessly blending tradition with modernity, and nature with humanity.

Functionality:
The residential design emphasizes fostering an ambiance of family togetherness and communication, harnessing natural light and airflow to facilitate family activities. Furthermore, it prioritizes child-friendliness, ensuring that the children’s area caters to their needs and safety, enabling children to feel cared for and protected by adults while playing. From the ground floor to the top floor, each space has been meticulously crafted to serve its unique function, while also smoothly connecting with one another through elements like stairs and windows. The design imbues the entire house with dynamism and vitality.

Sustainability:
Designers developed an innovative sustainable building material—hemp bricks for this project, which significantly enhance indoor temperature stability and reduce energy loss from heating and cooling. Moreover, based on the local natural environment, the design maximizes natural daylighting and ventilation, thus minimizing reliance on artificial lighting and ventilation systems. The window design considered sunlight reflection at various times, conducive to temperature regulation and energy conservation. Additionally, mountain spring water is introduced to the home, which ensures water quality and minimizes water resource waste.
