“Ginza Tsutaya Books is a place where Japanese culture and art intersect. By considering the use of the various spaces as background for the art and eliminating styling and decoration in the overall plan, “The beauty of function matches the Japanese sense of aesthetics”. The flow-lines of the aisles form chains that link the “inside and outside” spaces and the areas that are in between. Making “small irregularities”, depending upon the type of space formed, adds a gradual change to draw people’s eyes within the “overall regularity” of the construction. By “small irregularities” we mean the oblique lines among the horizontal and vertical lines giving an illogical but sensuously pleasant discontinuity to the logical space. This re-interpretation of Japanese culture attempts to blend the traditional and modern, based on a Japanese sense of understanding, and is exactly what “Ginza Tsutaya Books” is trying to project as we continue to change.
