Geoffrey Diner Gallery's - Booth for Design Miami in Basel

Tom Postma Design (TPD) was commissioned to design the Geoffrey Diner Gallery’s Design Miami/Basel 2021 booth. With over 35 years of experience, Maureen and Geoffrey Diner offer a highly curated selection of decorative furniture and fine art, including works by some of the most renowned artists and designers known today.

Innovation
The aim for the booth was to create various zones within one space, providing a homely setting where very diverse pieces could come together. The booth offers a rich environment with clear, minimal but high impactful gestures and allows the collection of presented works to be the main focus.

Creativity
The brief called for TPD to create the most fitting environment for a selection of 20th century furniture, including works from the Japanese-American designer George Nakashima, and Italian designer Gio Ponti. With the dark, dramatic and moody atmosphere of the booth, the design aimed to respond to the Diner’s affinity for cross-collecting. It provides a rich and textured, yet neutral space in which the presented work took centre stage.

Functionality
The dark green, velvet-panelled walls and display plinths provided a soft contrast to the warm tones of the timber pieces. A carefully illuminated mix of rich textures defined the space, with subtle details such as the placement of the Tiffany fire screen inside a niche, enriching the atmosphere without distracting the visitor from what was truly of utmost importance: the selection of Geoffrey Diner Gallery’s objects.

Sustainability
A carefully studied grid was used for the wall panels and plinths, considering efficient sizing and therefore reducing materials and resourses. There is no floor finish installed as the raw concrete flooring of the hall provided a beautiful contrast with the rich velvet wall panelling. The velvet is secured to the wall panels by using Velcro tape and is therefore easy to demount and re-use. After the fair, the fabric and plinths were stored for re-use in future booth configurations.
