Generator urban design-led hostels have been honoured globally as a change-maker in hospitality, offering affordable, design-savvy accommodation in prime locations. Through strategic investment in art and design, Generator shifted the hostel demographic from backpackers to include families, professionals, and business travellers, establishing and leading a new market segment. The flagship Generator in Amsterdam establishes a new level of budget luxury, combining a hostel, hotel, cultural hub, art gallery, café, nightclub and bar.
In the Oost neighbourhood, beside the spectacular Oosterpark, Generator Amsterdam reinvents a derelict historic zoological building. The concept combines dorm-style or private accommodations with cutting-edge design, chic public spaces, and on-site events (DJs, beer tastings, etc). Instead of chasing trends, the designers focused on creating a fun and creative atmosphere. Museum-quality art, lighting and furnishings are not on the spec list of your average hostel, but mixing these high design pieces with locally-sourced vintage finds gives the public spaces authentic charm.
The project’s challenges – working within the confines of a heritage building while adding guestrooms and a demarcated entrance – led to its greatest assets. Removing the third floor roof and replacing it with a two-floor glass curtain wall addition give guests floor-to-ceiling views of the park, while reflecting the surroundings, rendering the architecture virtually invisible.
