A beautifully orchestrated play of light and shade has been crafted to reveal the historical architecture of the triplet of listed gasholder frames, while equally creating a naturally welcoming atmosphere inside the contemporary residential areas. The project employs a restrained palette of details, including a custom lantern that is inspired by the form of the buildings.
Externally, light delivers a strong external identity and clarifies the circular geometries. Warm light is grazed up the front face of the columns, defining their form and revealing detail. The central space appears as the glowing heart of the scheme, and the tableau of the positively lit gasholder frames sits in perfect counterpoint to the adjacent silhouette of Gasholder Park.
Inside, the illumination of the atria enhances the experience of looking up to the sky. A simple wash of tuneable white light to the walls supplements and balances the available daylight, creating a soft comfortable appearance. At night, the glass dome and structure are left dark, transforming them into a mirror that enables a kaleidoscope of pattern and reflection. A warm-toned customised wall light marks the entrance to each apartment, while larger custom-designed floor lanterns are placed in the atria courtyards and within the roof gardens. These provide homely accents to the scheme and contribute a welcome sense of personal light at a human scale for the residents.
