At the entrance, a transition in the nature of the space can be subconsciously perceived. The step provides a space where visitors can remove their shoes and change into slippers.

Polycarbonate partitions line either side of the entrance corridor, imparting a dramatic nature to the space. In the spaces between the partitions are shoe lockers and cosmetic masks used to administer skin care to customers. The masks exhibited provide an advertising effect, and the partitions segregate the spaces to resolve potential visual clutter. The ceiling is finished with reflective material to give the sense of an infinitely expanding space.

The door leading into the inner space is also mirror-finished, imparting a sense of horizontal expansion as well to the entrance corridor. When one approaches the mirror-finished automatic door, the door slides open. The glare of natural light from the windows increases as the door opens, and guides one’s footsteps inward. Ahead of the customer is placed an information desk. The ceiling drops over the information desk, concentrating the space. Reflective material on the ceiling mirrors the inner space and what lies outside the windows, creating a profound and interesting visual effect.

An important objective was to provide all of the skincare rooms required by the client within the elliptical floor plan, while effectively incorporating the windows, occupying half the space, into the spatial design. The skincare rooms were split into two large masses, disposed on either side of the central space. The windows actively bring light into the customer space and give a visual sense of openness.

Subway trains passing by the site can be seen several times an hour, and the changing cityscape beyond the panes are incorporated as a design element which continually transforms the space. The skincare rooms form two masses on either side of the central space, so that they do not block incident light from the windows. To harness this light, the walls of the skincare rooms are made of polycarbonate. Light diffused through the polycarbonate loses its glare and takes on a more gentle nature. During daytime, a comfortable intensity of illumination is achieved even without artificial lighting. The light also helps to mitigate the imposing presence of the solid wall structure, making the same space feel more spacious and pleasant.

The polycarbonate finish on the two masses not only helps to illuminate the insides of the respective skincare rooms, but also reflects light back into the central hall. This gives the general space a bright and pleasant feeling, which is in agreement with the nature of the space itself. The two columns in the customer waiting space are surrounded by plants. The space is located on the third floor of a building, and the urbanized elements in the surrounding areas impart a rather cold feeling to the space. By wrapping the two columns with plants, the space is made to feel like an oasis in the heart of the city.
