When Flux hair boutique decided to collaborate with professional hair product provider Kerastase in opening a new salon in Xin-Yi District, a new brand concept was called for. In deciding how to visually connect the two brand identities, we took inspiration from their respective brand names. The geometrical similarities between the letters "X" and "K" were a jumping-off point for us to explore basic geometry and its means for creating ambiguous shapes. The morphological variation they shared proved to be the threshold that connected the two brand fields and ultimately unfolded the co-branding story. Resulting in the three-dimensional, angular ceiling. The study of letter morphology was redirected into a spatial defining system. The intersecting lines that characterize the two letters subdivide the ceiling into voids. While situated under the ceiling, we wanted customers to have the sense as if housed in a church. The high ceiling resembles the sublime image of a Gothic church, whilst combinations of angular corrugated metal boards reference the structural patterns of vaulted ribs. This modern take on classic architecture reflects the salons long-established reputation as well as its cutting-edge fashion-forward approach. Moreover, the linear texture of the corrugated metal board mimics the appearance of well-treated hair, and the staggered arrangement of pieces simulates a multi-layered hairstyle when seen overlapped from certain perspectives. In contrast to the drama of the ceiling, the white staccato walls along with the roughness of the plain terrazzo floor ground the space, bringing a sense of balance to the design. In addition, the dialogue between the juxtaposition of materials creates a sense of luxury and accentuates physical sensations. The salon has been subdivided into four distinct sections: The large glass expanse of the shop window allows the customer to see fully into the reception area of the salon. Centrally located, the sensuous lines of the counter immediately capture attention, drawing the eyes along to either side of the space. To the right, Kerastase products line the wall on elegant, simple shelving, whilst to the left lies the entrance, with a mingling and consultancy area just inside. Through staggard walls, one can glimpse into the main salon area, which makes it possible for passersby to absorb the inner atmosphere whilst maintaining a sense of privacy for those inside. Along the perimeter of the rectangular-shaped salon, are arranged 9 chairs with stations, with two other chairs have been placed as a focal point. At the back of the salon sits a glass box with two rooms nestled inside for scalp treatments and hair washing. The low ceiling and soft lighting make for a cozy, intimate space. Lastly, there are two VIP rooms, located at the side of the salon, which have their own separate entrance to increase the sense of privacy. Moreover, throughout the salon, carefully selected furniture has been used like the sculpture to punctuate the space; by giving considered thought specifically to the color, shape, material, and history of the pieces, an elegant, multi-dimensional design has been realized. For example, the tan retro salon chairs not only disrupt the expanse by adding a shot of color but also exude a timeless elegance with their classic form and leather covering.
