The Schippersbeurs ‘Fiera’ (1895), with the Handelsbeurs (1531-world’s first purpose-built commodity exchange) as perfect backdrop, has always been a place where products and people from all over the world came together. Now, since closure in the 90’s and after a thorough renovation, open for a unique experience where honest cuisine and all-day hospitality take central stage in a magical décor. The location translates itself into a sequence of spaces. After entering through the relatively small entrance you will be overwhelmed by the immediate grandeur and ornamentation. The main hall of the restaurant with an imposing high ceiling, provides visual access to the gold-shaped literally open kitchen. The kitchen was only allowed as ‘box-in-box’ so that heritage value is never touched. Creating intimate dining spaces was also highly valued on the clients list. Mixed low-normal-high dining heights, small tables each individually illuminated with comfortable seating, were used to diversify experiences. A transparent ‘green screen’ separates the bar from the restaurant. This bringing nature into a place with no direct outside view, provides both areas with a feeling of energy and coziness. The mosaic floor served as the most generous source of inspiration. The caduceus, symbol of trade, formed the bar, executed in fragmented marble. The color palette has been further reused in the total interior experience; green and burgundy fabrics, black steelwork and yellow-gold brass accents. Goal and challenge was to design an interior, timeless, long-term, luxurious but flexible that does not compete with the protected historical location and its DNA but reinforces it to create once again lasting welcoming memories.
