The 349-key Moxy Chelsea hotel features exquisite craftsmanship and unexpected details at every turn, from the ground floor Italian restaurant that feels like a secret spot off of a narrow side street in Rome, to the indoor-outdoor rooftop bar that celebrates views of the New York City skyline. Rockwell Group wanted to offer both a refuge from city life as well as a nod to the richness of the neighborhood with a lush interior landscape specific to the Flower Market. The ground floor Feroce Ristorante is a series of choreographed rooms culminating in an outdoor terrace. Guests enter the restaurant through Feroce Caffé with glass airplane hangar-style doors that can be raised all the way up, opening the space to the sidewalk, as in Italy. A collection of colorful Italian apothecary candy displays greets visitors at the entrance. Recessed Venetian plaster walls, a terra cotta-like barrel vault ceiling, and refined geometric light fixtures all conspire to transport guests to early 20th Century Milan and Rome. In the dining room, Rockwell took a slightly theatrical approach to capture the vision and energy of its proprietor, Francesco Panella, with leather banquettes that take their cues from the upholstery in vintage Ferraris and a vintage Italian liquor poster brought to life as a three-dimensional, life-size glass sculpture.
