There are some things that Russians share with Italians: there’s a passion for football, a love for pizza and a care for interiors. In Moscow, architecture studio Mast designed a new pizzeria called FunFood that combines them all under one roof. Located near the metro station Dinamo, the stop that leads to the VTB Arena, FunFood was designed for high attendance: office workers from nearby buildings, as well as football and music fans. To accommodate a large number of customers, the architects designed a layout that also helps with table turnover and fast service. An open kitchen and a bar counter push away the seating area along the perimeter of the venue. The floor is paved with stone, the walls flaunt exposed concrete and the kitchen island is made of concrete – nods to the Soviet avant-garde aesthetic, to contrast the warmth of the wood and fire of the oven. The football theme is included in every aspect of the space – for example, the choice of the colour blue is a reference to the branding of football club Dynamo Moscow. But at the end of the tall arches – made possible thanks to a seven-metre-high ceiling – a surprise awaits both Soviet nostalgics and football fans: there’s a ceramic panel featuring the image of Lev Yashin, the most legendary goalkeeper of USSR times.
