Paf atelier designed and produced an immersive installation with Yoann Bourgeois (a renowned French dancer, director and choreographer) for the contemporary art fair at 104 in Paris. Face au vide is an immersive and experiential installation that invites the visitor to become physically and emotionally involved in a dizzying ascent. As they progress up a strange staircase that leads nowhere, they are asked questions that invite them to reflect on their existential state. At the top of his journey, the visitor is faced with the ultimate risk: a jump into the void. The challenge was to lead Yoann Bourgeois to something else. Both formally and aesthetically. To get away from the white, pure monolithic block that he's used to and implement his narrative scenographically. The request was quite simple. A 5 m high climb and then a jump into the void by the public. The fall is filmed and broadcast live on screen. By progressing on the four sides of this space, the public loses its bearings, it turns on itself before finally arriving on a cantilevered platform. The ascent takes place in the dark. Distributed punctually in the structure horizontally and vertically, the rare lights contribute to the visual deconstruction of the installation. Nothing was built for this project as it is entirely a scaffolding structure. The materials are rented and have a life before and after the project. It's made to be re-used and in constant motion to follow the rhythm of the company tour.
