OutsideIn is a design concept store, located in Zurich, based on Enea architectural landscape company’s vision that stands to enhance the importance of creating a symbiosis between exterior and interior and to increase the public sensibility toward craftsmanship, sustainability, durable materials, and the history that every good design object brings within it. This philosophy permeates the overall interior architecture design: the space is divided into three main areas, each conceptually interpreting an outdoor scene. The entrance represents the vertical opening sensation of a roman villa patio; the central area is conceived like a pergola connecting the outside to the inside part of the store, and the meeting room recalls a contemporary Japanese garden pavilion. Another meaningful theme that guided the design of the interior custom-made elements is grafting: a botanical technique where a weak plant is strengthened by joining it with stronger pieces. It is a simple gesture that creates an extremely complex result but, as all simple designs, requires a lot of knowledge to be successful and flawless. The same potential, accuracy, and knowledge are behind the Japanese technique used to make Chidori: an old Japanese toy created by assembling wooden pieces with special joints but without any nails. With these values in mind, celebrating the complexity that stands behind the simplicity, a simple wood stick has been chosen as a base to design all the interior elements: in different configurations, it creates the bookcase at the entrance, the pergola ceiling that connects the outdoor veranda with the inner central part of the store, and the complete covering of the meeting room. Recalling Japan again as an inspiration source, a bonsai is positioned prominently in the heart of the store within a display space for the special arts and objects selected by the company delivering a minimal and Zen-like atmosphere. The finishes are minimised to the choice of natural stone and wood, ingredients generally decisive in Enzo Enea’s landscape projects and materials which, enhanced with the interplay of light and shadows, respond to the colours and textures of the exterior, thereby eliminating the boundaries between the two entities.
