Brief & challenges Eeetwell is a Malta based restaurant concept that serves healthy, locally sourced food with a large portion of awareness on the side. This day and age, it’s easy to forget where your food comes from. Let alone the impact it has on our bodies, our lives and the communities surrounding us. Eeetwell is set on doing something about that and change the way people think about food. With more than 10 locations in Malta, the restaurant concept is now expanding towards the European mainland with this first location in Antwerp, Belgium. Although Eeetwell’s ambition was clear, their current restaurant design didn’t reflect their fresh and conscious attitude towards food. On the contrary, they blended it in with all of the other generic healthy food stores using typical healthy restaurant cues like white metro tiles, exposed bricks and reclaimed wood. Design approach We decided to drop this faux-artisanal aesthetic and level up towards a solid, more mature interior design that articulates Eeetwell’s upfront and authentic relation to fresh food, the suppliers who grow it and the people who end up eating it. From a sustainability point of view, we mainly focussed on the customer’s wellbeing. We aimed to create a green, fresh and natural space to counterbalance the slightly cold, metropolitan environment the restaurant was located at. The colour palette reflects the warm and natural character of Eeetwell’s Maltese roots. Sandy shades, dark greens and a rough wall finishing add a rural, yet revitalizing vibe to the place. The exposed bricks from the original interior do return, but in a novel way. The counter is made up out of sand coloured bricks in a weaving pattern. It hints at the typical wicker baskets used to collect freshly plucked vegetables. From a functional point of view, the main challenge was the existing space itself. We had to work with the existing structure and architecture of the building. We used Eeetwell’s signature swirl from the logo as a curvy, organic line on the floor to create an efficient customer flow and define the seating area. To enhance this approach even more, the swirl in the flooring is reflected on the ceiling as a striking lighting element. It allowed us to soften the sharp angles within the existing space. Added bonus: it’s a highly recognizable brand element for visitors. Powerful, yet playful and fresh. The result is a restaurant design that perfectly reflects and enhances the brand’s home-grown food roots and ambition to change the way people think about food.
