We were approached by the client, a laminate manufacturer with an interesting ‘problem’. Conventionally, the laminate business operates on a B to B (Business to Business) model. With exponentially growing B to C (Business to Customer) trend due to rapid growth in online retail and design platforms, EDL started receiving visits from direct homeowners to view large format laminates inadequately imagined from small catalogue samples. Apart, EDL has been actively engaging the local design community, commissioning design collaborations with architects and designers in conjunction with design-based events from 2014. These events are typically short in duration, and the client desired to have a space to showcase the ideas behind these collaborations. Approaching the design of the space much alike creating art and gardens, we imagined a journey through a secret garden, where there’s a heightened sense of discovery and uncovering. The journey through the various zones is carefully choreographed to create interesting visual dialogues. The different zones are alike chapters of a book where each zone showcases a particular aspect of the laminate story but when pieced together, they unfold a richer story. This is a story where the beginning is clearly marked but the ending and sequence can be explored in many different ways.
