Double Macchiato is a multifaceted design platform founded by Rafael de Cárdenas in collaboration with PIN–UP magazine editor-in-chief Felix Burrichter, creative director Jen Brill, and Peter Knell. Its first iteration was a holiday market that occupied Paris’s Balice Hertling gallery in December 2018. RDC/AAL created a unique, typologically indeterminate atmosphere, with a rigorously curated selection of goods placed within a gallery setting. Plain steel tables and packing crates were used for display, while the white-cube space was left largely undisturbed apart from a moment of vivid red backdrop spanning wall and floor. This unobtrusive staging placed an emphasis on the meticulously arranged constellations of items for sale — ranging from centuries-old Japanese ceramics to bespoke leather teddy bears — while infusing the familiar gift-shop format with that of a contemporary art gallery, and vice versa.
