The project was born from the task of unifying three adjoining buildings, each with different stories, courtyards and facades, into one single building, seeking to maintain the correct balance between restoration and innovation.
The architectural design reconfigures the roofs into a new piano nobile that can be used by hotel clients, residents and public alike. This architectural gesture carries over into the very heart of the building, transforming the three small enclosures into a single courtyard of generous proportions, creating an all-season covered garden open to the rest of the city and offering a wonderful prospect for the rooms fronting onto it.
The historical context and the enhancement of important architectural features is also the starting point for the development of the hotel's interior design, where the interpretative matrix is again contemporary with the introduction of unexpected and sometimes ironic elements.
The single transparent roof was realized with high-performance glass which limits any overheating of the internal courtyard, while overhangs and external roller blinds protect the windows to provide the necessary shading. Although the perimetral walls are very thick, energy efficiency of the building was improved through increasing the thermal insultation.
The new internal façade was realized using low maintenance, 100% certified recyclable materials.
Wherever possible, the choice of materials and the search for finishes was concentrated locally, while the fixed furnishings were realized on site by local artisans, as for example the Zsolnay tiles that line the preexisting staircase and the shingles that adorn the counter of the Anton Bar & Deli.
Partnering companies and suppliers were selected also on the basis of their adoption of environmentally friendly work and production practices.
The project brought new technology to the historic buildings to enable the structures to be used in a contemporary context.
The climate-controlled environment of the central courtyard is attained by means of a natural and passive ventilation system which also benefits all the overlooking elements. The internal garden is like a micro-ecosystem able to control both climatization and illumination.
