In this project, we will make the most of the charm of the surrounding environment of the old private house facing the bamboo forest and the charm of the time that the wooden building has surpassed since it was built over 80 years ago.

The aim was to add new value to the space and create a space that is comfortable for both people and the environment.

While the wooden housing which was built more than 80 years ago is old and dilapidated, there are usable structure and parts. We would have utilized them as much as possible and retained them as the existing condition to minimize the waste.

The client requested functionality such as workspace and storage, as well as communication between staff, and a space that made use of the existing housing. The structure of the existing building was expanded in a way that blended in with the structure of the existing housing, nevertheless the space was not large enough to meet the requirements. Therefore, we created steps as an alternative solution of building inner walls which create a space for communication and work. By gently dividing the space into zones, we created a structure that allows for both to be compatible within a single space.

In addition, the wall facing the bamboo forest is made of large glass, allowing the adjacent bamboo forest to be used as the background for the landscaping and giving the space a sense of spaciousness.

Highly reflective materials were used for desks, shelves, and other fixtures to reflect the scene like a mirrored water surface, creating continuity between the outside and inside views, creating a visual sense of spaciousness, and creating a space with a more open feel.

This time, we tried contrasting relationships between the elements that compose the design, such as time, space, and materials, and tried to incorporate them into the space so that they harmoniously coexist within the space. We kept the existing wooden structure such as pillars and beams intact, while creating a temporal contrast by using materials and shapes that give an inorganic and artificial impression to new fixtures such as desks and shelves.

By using the adjacent bamboo forest as the background for the landscaping and unifying the interior space with black, we create a spatial contrast that makes us conscious of inside and outside, and by using highly reflective materials for the fixtures, we create a contrast between virtual and real image.

By giving a range of textures to the materials, we created contrasts in texture, and by consciously coexisting with pairs like these in the space, the presence of each pair stands out.In addition, through these processes, information is stripped away from the space where the color is unified to black, and the relationships between these spaces are emphasized. These efforts resulted in a space with a higher quality, dignified impression, and a fantastic atmosphere.
