Designer Sang breaks with tradition, and brings unique and stylish design ideas to life, creating aesthetic and practical living spaces.
“There are certain things that cannot be changed, it’s better to play around with our thoughts!”
This residential unit was originally a polygonal plan with uneven partitions, which was not appealing structurally nor visually and was actually a great waste of usable space.
First of all, as an introduction to the apartment which has an odd floor plan, the wooden-arched foyer enhances the visual impression, while creating a hidden storage space in the foyer by utilising the space between the arch and the wall. The arched foyer not only makes a good first impression that makes the room feel cozy, but also meets the practical needs of the guests in life.
Secondly, the separation of static and dynamic spaces can allow family members to enjoy their personal interests beyond life routines. By repositioning the master bedroom near the entrance where the living room was originally located, the arched foyer design can be a barrier protecting the privacy of the bedroom.
Meanwhile, the foyer can serve as a soundproofing wall so that guests can enjoy watching videos in the dining room without disturbing others in the bedroom. Thirdly, to enhance the emotional interaction across each family member in the living space, the original cold wall partition was removed, bringing the kitchen, living room and dining together in the same open space. Besides, Sang coated the originally fixed drain pipes in the open kitchen with polished galvanised steel, reinventing a beautiful spot where family members can enjoy gathering around at the centre of the flat.
Without being bound by reality, to deal with certain things that cannot be changed, we think flexibility. Instead of parting with immutable objects, why not let them coexist with creativity?
Nothing is perfect. Only with proper spatial planning can design values be fully delivered in terms of aesthetic and practicality.
