The creative studio WANNA designs "Cozy Bunker", a reinterpretation of an underground shelter with which, alongside the company Formica Group, is present at the 59th edition of Casa Decor, the most important interior design and architecture exhibition in Spain.
In a "BANI" world, interest in bunkers, and their construction is booming in the global real estate sector. This widespread need to prepare for an imminent global collapse has prompted WANNA to ask: What response could interior design provide in emergency living spaces?
With this starting point, "Cozy Bunker" is born, an ephemeral project that, inspired by the brutalist architecture of Carlo Scarpa and the aesthetic of the "Rascainfiernos" by the Madrid-based Architect Fernando Higueras, aims to transform a bunker into a resilient space that, in addition to ensuring survival underground, promotes the emotional well-being of its inhabitants.
"Cozy Bunker" invites us to rethink bunker design by combining two previously incompatible concepts: well-being and survival. Based on this conceptual duality, the space proposes a dialogue between opposites. On the one hand, the solid construction inspired by brutalist aesthetics of the access corridor, with a stony appearance, conveys security and inaccessibility. On the other hand, the enveloping minimalism and chromatic warmth of the shelter's interior evoke relaxation and hope, providing a pleasant experience to help abstract from what is happening outside.
The project, entirely built with high-pressure laminates from Formica, metallic laminates from Homapal, and innovative surfaces from FENIX, showcases the great versatility of these materials in terms of design, geometries, and volumes, as well as their richness of colors and finishes.
For the design, WANNA starts from principles such as playing with heights, taking advantage of the four and a half meters of space, structural solidity, indirect light, and volumetrics. The space is accessed through a corridor that looks as though it has been carved into a rock. Along the corridor, there are reminiscences of the outside world, such as a spring, hanging vegetation, and a striking crack through which light filters. The journey concludes with the arrival at the shelter itself, an enveloping and warm space, with reddish tones and a subdued atmosphere.
Visitors of "Cozy Bunker" have a plausible experience, but one that is far from fatalism. That's why WANNA frame it in a real context, as if it were a real estate promotion in which, through humor, they suggest that the bunker can be a space that visitors can give alternative uses to. So that it becomes the best setting to disconnect, evade, or disappear. In short, to survive the emergencies of everyday life.
