The Modern Side of Architecture Heritage: Coscia Boutique's Ode to Fujian Tulou

ADS (ALLDESIGNSTUDIO) has crafted a novel shopping experience within the Fuzhou Kerry Center in Fujian, China, with their latest project for the Italian boutique, Coscia. Drawing inspiration from Fujian's iconic cultural heritage——Tulou architecture. The history of Fujian Tulou, tracing its roots back to the 15th century, embodies the ancient art of rammed earth construction. These earthen fortresses were meticulously designed with a central open courtyard, symbolizing communal living and defense for large families.

Taking inspirations from the distinctive circular form of Tulou, ADS deconstructs and reimagines this architectural icon. Half-circle segments radiate from a central , extending into the interior space, echoing the cross-sectional layout of Tulou structures.

The spatial configuration unfolds along five circular corridors, employing geometric aesthetics to create interconnected yet distinct spatial units. Gradually expanding spacing between layers of columns introduces rhythm and functionality into the design, maximizing practicality without compromising aesthetics.

Upon entering, customers are greeted by transparent glass doors that seamlessly integrate with the surrounding space, offering a glimpse into the circular interiors. Inside, the color palette pays homage to Tulou's roof tiles and exterior walls, combining deep, tranquil black with soft travertine tones. This harmonious blend reflects tradition while infusing a minimalist, modern ambiance into the space.

Adhering to the restoration of natural, primal beauty, the wall columns seamlessly connect with the floor using travertine that has a creamy, smooth texture. The travertine's pale beige background features naturally flowing, rich layers. The exposed surface of the stone, with its handcrafted roughness, aims to reflect the texture of the rammed earth used in Tulou's exterior walls, embodying the distinctive architectural culture of the region.

Window frames transform into movable cabinets, adorned with avant-garde metal textures, allowing for flexible product displays and enriching the spatial flow.

As an extension of the encircling roof structure, the curved ceiling at the top echoes the form of the sky. With changing light films, the lighting simulates various natural weather conditions like sunny days, cloudy skies, and twilight.

Dynamic circular pathways guide patrons through the space, with black-rendered tables and chairs providing moments of respite amidst the bustling retail environment.

Inspired by Fujian's terraced landscapes, the sofa design in the rest area features layered contours, echoing the region's natural topography.

The fitting rooms offer cozy wooden mountain-shaped seats for added comfort, enhancing the shopping experience. The carpet, inspired by terraced fields, features three-dimensional lines, providing a unique tactile and visual experience reminiscent of walking on layered landscapes.
