1. Idea
HYUNDAI Department Store introduced "HYUNDAI Department Store CONNECT" at its Busan location, blending elements of both a department store and an outlet. The HYUNDAI CONNECT FOOD CENTER targets customers seeking a casual yet luxurious experience, aiming to create a distinctive brand identity that caters to their preferences.
2. Functionality & Creativity
The Busan store focuses on attracting more customers by offering a carefully curated merchandise selection while maintaining a consistent identity across its food court. The concept is built around a "market" theme, with the night market designed like a zigzag layout of food stalls to enhance customer engagement. The daytime market uses natural light to create a vibrant, lively atmosphere, guiding visitors through winding alleys toward a central space.
The division between the "night market," where food is bought and sold, and the "day market," where food is enjoyed, helps manage the complex circulation within the store. Through thoughtful information design, the layout allows customers to explore the space like an alley, providing an experience of discovering hidden gems. This approach not only creates an enjoyable experience but also enhances the functionality of the space, allowing seamless integration of shopping and dining in a convenient flow.
3. Innovation
The design had to work within the constraints of the existing ceiling and HVAC systems, so we focused on distinguishing between areas to preserve and those to modify for an efficient layout. The irregular column placement and misalignment of the space were addressed by arranging the stores in a zigzag pattern, simulating a market alley. This design approach minimized unnecessary structures and created a dynamic, layered space. It conveyed a lively market atmosphere that went beyond a simple dining area.
4. Eco-social Impact
In a department store environment where energy consumption is high, energy use is managed efficiently through the careful layout and separation of equipment. The space incorporates eco-friendly materials, emphasizing sustainability by using recyclable materials for furniture and textures. These efforts highlight the store's commitment to providing an exceptional customer experience while excelling in safety, eco-friendliness, and sustainability.
