Since the establishment of the tailor T-Michael in Bergen, the entrepreneur couple behind Michelsens, have followed T-Michael's design and business development closely. His renovated apartment (1965) is in an building centrally located in Bergen. The apartment was totally demolished and then rebuilt according to a new plan and the solution was to reflect T-Michael's design philosophy together with Michelsens holistic interior philosophy, design method, engineering, production, and implementation.
Michelsens has previously completed projects with a compact living concept, and therefore had knowledge and experience of this type of project with specialist expertise in creativity, space utilization and self-produced multifunctional product solutions. This has been an identity-creating apartment object where the backdrop has been urbanization, fewer m² per. per capita and a great market need with increased demand for a higher degree of utilization, quality, functionality, craftsmanship and sustainability.
The combination of Scandinavian simplicity together with Japanese material use and aesthetics made the merger right, as both design directions are characterized by simple shapes, handmade materials and often objects with a long life. Here the focus is on the visual expansion of the room by making good use of natural light, minimalism, color harmony and multifunctionality. Together with a touch of 50's style on the interior it has a classic and playful expression, where the combination of aesthetics, functionality and quality is in focus.
Materials, products, and qualities were in discussions from the start with a desired combination of tradition and innovation. The choice of flooring was easy and the fact that the Mellow is a seamless flooring system that supports the focus on the curved wall. Also, the seamless floor works like a blank canvas so all the attention goes to the design furniture. The space in the room with custom-built walls have been constructed as a soft organic shape that follows through the room - and forms a warm shape with different content.
From being a bedroom wall with a ceiling-high sliding door, to - at the other end - becoming a large library cabinet with maximum utilization of interior space on cabinets and in the door itself. The curved wall clad in 5 mm flexible wood panel creates good materiality and identity for the entire apartment and is the supporting design element. The groove panel with twig has a natural play of colors that emphasizes the wood's unique material quality.
The unique room installation is built on a small area, which can be compared to building a boat interior in an apartment. The panel is flexible and was glued to the studwork, planning and millimeter precision were essential in the project. The construction itself was challenging to cover and the design and execution were characterized by an extremely good interaction between the designer and craftsmen. This is the very core of Michelsens.
