Colors of time - Shanhai Pavilion Restaurant

An old building dating back to the Japanese Governor Generalship was renovated into this restaurant. Originally a physician’s abode, extensive discussions were held with the owner prior to dismantling and restoration. Large quantities of well-aged doors, windows, railings, stained glass, and wooden materials were retained. Some of these objects had been well preserved despite many years of use. Others, however, were exposed to the elements and damaged. These items can be repaired using new technology, methods, and materials before use. Marks of time on the original building were retained during design and repairs. Minor conflicts between new construction materials or techniques introduced during the process were not concealed. These conflicting signatures not only reflect a rich combination of layers, but also provide a sense of history that allows diners to experience cozy nostalgia.
