Launched December 2019 on the new Costa Smeralda, Costa Design Collection Museum (CoDe) was conceived as a unique and unifying feature of the 3,000-cabin Italian cruise ship. The first ever design museum at sea, the collection exemplifies the ship's theme, Italy's Finest, crowning the ship with a direct celebration of modern Italian design with key areas of innovation including product design, fashion, transportation and Italian cinema. Curated by Matteo Vercelloni and designed by Adam D. Tihany, the CoDe collection is intended as a tribute to the history of Italian-made excellence, celebrating the ongoing global influence of Italian creativity. Located on Deck 7 of Costa Smeralda, CoDe is both a captivating destination as well as an interactive ‘pass through’ attraction, encouraging guests to visit it multiple times during their cruise. Unlike any other passageway onboard, the museum’s highly contemporary stainless steel portal meets the unique design challenges of the space with a series of arches lit from the inside. As the rings of the tunnel separate, guests can veer off the pathway to explore the exhibition spaces to the right and left of the arches. The CoDe collection contains more than 470 exhibits of objects and furnishings, artifacts, anecdotes and fashion items connected to the history of 'Made in Italy.' Composed of products most of which are still featured in the catalogues of Italian brands, the display narrates the vitality of furnishings and objects that go beyond passing fashions, becoming “classics” of Italian design from the 1930s to the present. This dimension of “permanence” in time is accompanied by a section on memory where you can track down a series of objects of affection that have been parts of our lives, generation after generation. The space on transportation and the fashion showcase (curated by Augusta Grecchi) allow us to widen our perspective beyond the furniture sector, while the section on cinema, seen in an expressive collection of scenes and narrative moments (curated by Roberto Dassoni), bears witness over time to the spread of taste and the value of the creativity of Italian design in the broadest sense of the term.
