The project for Clínica Durán, a Dentistry and Aesthetics Clinic located in Madrid, is based on functional and programmatic rigor, but with the clear and fundamental objective of creating a welcoming and warm space without losing the aseptic character that should prevail in healthcare environments. The focus along all design process was to offer a better experience when going to the dentist. The real innovation in this project refers to revolutionizing the patients’ experience.
In terms of functionality, character and materiality, the project is divided into two different functional spaces: the reception-waiting area and the clinical area.
The reception enjoys a wide space with double height, a soft urban character that welcome customers in a warm environment, full of natural light and where vegetation and stone pavements have been used as a private extension of the urban space. It embodies an idealistic perception of an urban environment, hard and soft at the same time. Functionality in this area is solved with a single piece of furniture providing space for two receptionists with storage and, at the same time a shelf for magazines, coffee and water spot facing the waiting space.
Like a duplication of the original one, a new two-story “façade” of ribbed glass and wood unifies and separates the clinical area from the reception space. All cabinets and rest of the clinical area is accessed through a single archway that marks the clear change in materiality. The four cabinets, the sterilization room and the X-ray room are located on the first floor, while the upper floor, for private use only, houses the storage rooms, offices and staff service areas. Most of this places are receiving natural light from the reception-waiting area through the double height ribbed glass façade but still enjoy the privacy desired for this kind of spaces.
Most installations, including sound system, air conditioning and heating have been integrated into the wooden structures. All materials involved in the project are natural, including wood, stone and linen. The stone is coming from a local stone quarry, all furnitures are from local manufacturers and qualified with UL Greenguard Gold Certificarte.
Every interior details, signage and brand light-boxes reinforces the brand fresh and new concept keeping a simple but elegant line.
The aim has been to achieve a safe and calm reception space wile keeping its urban character that reinforces the concept: “a clinic within a clinic”.
