Cinque Ports, a lynchpin venue within the newly re-launched Dreamland Margate - a vibrant, culturally regenerative reimagining of the famous Victorian amusement park - is an expansive, multi-storey seafront gastro-pub. The design traces a distinct line back to the Grade II listed building’s historic roots: it was originally constructed in the 1930s to revive the decadence of the Victorian era when park’s very first rides were installed (prior to becoming ‘Dreamland’ in the 1920s), then in the 1960s became a key haunt for two of British youth culture’s most seminal warring factions - the mods and the rockers. Even the name, a return to its original moniker, pays homage to Margate’s heritage as a busy commercial trading harbour. As such, the renovation offers a full-spectrum mix of old-world charm and contemporary charisma. The aesthetic is artfully distressed meets artisanal, featuring slick monochrome wall tiling, finely corniced ceilings, brassy pendant lamps issuing soft ‘ships’ lighting, ‘Juliette’ balconies and a wraparound wooden bar. Aside an upstairs oyster bar it also houses an open-plan kitchen and large communal dining spaces surrounding a vintage Vespa scooter. The washrooms include semi-industrial copper piping and wall-mounted motorcycle mirrors. The unusual panoramic views from the rooftop terrace tip a nod to local history, too - specifically the iconic British painter JMW Turner who was famously inspired by Kent’s dramatic coastal skies.
