For the Capri by Fraser on Berlin’s Spree Island, JOI-Design’s concept “layers of history” was inspired by its Petriplatz location. Integrated with a museum and church for a new, one-of-a-kind destination, this long-stay apartment hotel encourages fun whilst learning about Berlin’s birthplace. In the lobby, a perforated golden hexagon installation overlays an etching of the island’s ancient structures, a metaphor for the enduring value of past civilisations. Freestanding furniture allows for flexible configuration atop a tempered glass floor, an “immersion” into the archaeological dig below. Warm tones bring a sense of wellbeing to comfortable, modern guestrooms. Maps of ancient Petriplatz on the wall and rug also reference Berlin’s heritage. Caprilicious restaurant’s motto “dip into history”, derived from the menu’s dipping sauces, also flavoured its design with dip-dyed orange interiors including art, furniture, walls and three-dimensional letters spelling HISTORY. Repeated stylistic elements allude to sacred geometry and physics: the hexagon motif reappears in the bar display, guestroom headboards, sculptures and rugs; timber shelves strung onto ropes suggest suspension between time and space; and multicoloured strings hung in doorways hint at timeline charts. Created in the spirit of fun, playful accessories and palettes infuse guests with joy, curiosity and empowerment to learn.
