Creativity
Canopy by Hilton is a lifestyle brand focused on the idea of “neighborhood” and deeply connected to its local environment. It offers designs and services that reflect the unique qualities of the area. The design concept, “HACK Osaka,” is based on the idea of reimagining existing concepts, blending new ideas, and challenging traditional systems. For Canopy, this meant creating a hotel that captures a fresh, playful take on Osaka’s local identity and culture.

The “Hack Osaka” concept was inspired by a target audience of millennials—individuals who embrace change, mix ideas, and challenge norms. The goal was to align with their lifestyle while celebrating Osaka, a city known for its humor and outgoing energy. By reinterpreting Osaka’s culture in a modern, clean, and humorous way, Canopy aimed to create a “new Osaka lifestyle” that reflects the brand’s neighborhood-focused philosophy.

In the public spaces, the hotel features Osaka-themed art, including takoyaki (octopus balls) and butaman (pork buns), paired with vibrant colors that bring the spirit of Osaka to life. The space is filled with interactive elements like seesaws, smart ball games, and various furniture pieces that encourage social interaction and help connect guests to the local community.

The guest rooms are designed with “canopies” over the beds, featuring graphics inspired by Hideyoshi’s gourd-shaped battle standard. Design elements like a retro-style minibar and a quirky Fukusuke doll, known for its playful representation of Osaka’s history, highlight the city’s unique sense of humor and cultural identity.

Functionality
The hotel’s public area was envisioned as seamlessly connected, creating a space where not only guests but also a diverse range of people can come together and enjoy different scenes unfolding simultaneously. Various furniture, artwork, and playful elements such as seesaws and smart ball games are arranged to bring people closer together and create opportunities to engage with the neighborhood.

Eco-social impact
By integrating a cogeneration system and district heating and cooling, the hotel not only manages energy efficiently within its area but also enables collaboration with external energy sources and energy independence during emergencies for the entire development. The district has earned LEED Gold certification (for Neighborhood Development) and SITES Gold certification (pre-certification for Landscape).
