In commemoration of the centennial of the Battle of Vimy Ridge during the First World War, and to mark the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, Veterans Affairs Canada has committed to build a new visitor education center on the site of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in Vimy, France. The project is located on a 107 hectare site of battlefield terrain complete with trenches and tunnels, bathed in the memory of this significant globally impactful event. Furthermore, it is one of only two National Historic Sites situated outside of Canada. Part of the intent for the project was to offer all audiences a global experience promoting a connection to the elements of the site; the discovery of the tangible characteristics and relics of the site, as well as the emotive memory which it evokes. This project required an innovative architectural and scenographic approach to commemorate the events that occurred on the site and also be reflective of the current era, whilst remaining mindful to not detract attention from the distinguished memorial. Through this collaborative approach, the new facility was resolutely oriented toward a contemporary installation utilizing an authentic container/content concept, favouring a formal approach likely to seduce the passing visitor before they make their way onto the impressive memorial.
